New Books for the Library

I just placed an order for new books! This gets everyone excited around here, but if you are reading from anywhere besides AHEC you might want to know what we are getting. Well, it will take a couple of weeks for them to be processed and placed on the shelf and during that time I'll post a list of new titles, but for now I will just say that there are plenty of good ones and a lot of popular ones (and most of them are both). Meanwhile if you want to know what we already have on the shelf please visit the UAMS Library Catalog. Select "Texarkana" in the drop down menu to the right of the search box.

SCC/MLA annual meeting results!

Jennifer and I attended a meeting in Tulsa for the South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association, October 16-21. The meeting was great! We got to attend a lot of CE, meet with old friends and make some new ones, and see Tulsa, which seems like an awesome place to live and work. Thanks to the Local Arrangements Committee for a great conference!

As I sort through the information gathered from the CEs, booths, vendors, and colleagues I will try to post some of the more useful and interesting resources here.

The first one I'd like to share is about PATIENT SAFETY. This site is directed toward the patient, but any clinician can go to this site and use the resources to make patient communication easier. www.ahrq.gov/questionsaretheanswer/. This site identifies the questions that are essential to good clinicial/patient care and to better health.
Stay tuned for more updates from the conference!

JULY 2009

One of the first things that I would like to share is the excitement over one of our resident's publication in the Evidence Based Practice Helpdesk. Dr. Fakouri worked with our previous director, Bill McIntyre, Pharm.D., on a solution to the question "Should we advise patients to keep syrup of ipecac on hand for poisonings?" The answer was "NO" if you were wondering, but the long version can be found in the June 2009 issue of Evidence Based Practice (12(6): page 7). Congrats to them on that.

There is also a great article in Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine about back pain. Its a review that covers the ins and outs of back pain - like causes, goals, management, etc. A good refresher! Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine v. 76(7): 394; 2009

Another article that caught my eye was from American Journal of Nursing. "'It Depends': Medical Residents' Perspectives on Working with Nurses. This article takes a look at nurse/physician relationships through the residents' viewpoint. There are certain things that physicians in the study looked for in nurses before they felt that they were adequate at decision making. This can be found in AJN v109(7): 34; 2009
